While this hat style has a rich history, it has gained recent popularity through the 2011 release of Buck the Sundance Audience Award winning documentary, based on the life of professional horseman Buck Brannaman. Directed by Cindy Meehl, this is a documentary about Buck’s life and his ability to understand and connect people to their horses. Both Buck and Cindy Meehl are shown wearing their unique versions of the flat brim Vaquero Style hat. Each of their hats have been shaped to achieve their unique look and style. See below for directions on shaping our Palm Leaf version of the Vaquero style.

Shaping the Palm Leaf Hat:
Both water or steam may be used to alter the shape of a palm leaf hat. Steam changes the texture of the palm leaf very little compared to soaking it in water. Using the steam of a tea kettle works well to minimally alter the shape. Shape as you steam. Once the desired brim shape is achieved, you need to stablize the shape to allow it to set. Once shaped, expect a sticky feel to the hat until the hat is dry. Achieving the desired shape is up to the skill of the hat shaper. Water may be used to make dramatic changes to the crown or brim of the palm leaf hats. However, soaking the palm leaf hats will alter the smooth, sharp finish.
Please note...Once re-shaped, the hat may not be returned.
